Welcome to the final stretch of the offseason! School is back in session, the guys are back on campus and fall training camp is here for the Omaha Mavericks and college hockey teams around the country.
Mike Gabinet and the Omaha coaching staff have added 11 newcomers to the roster this summer and we’re going to do a quick preview piece on each of them so that you know a little bit about who they are and where they’re coming from before they hit the ice on October 2nd.
I didn’t really know what the best order to do these in was so we are going to go in order from when they were officially announced by the program.
First up we’ve got 6’0” 190 pound defenseman Jayden Jubenvill from Gilbert Plains, Manitoba!
Jayden comes to Omaha as a transfer from NCHC foe North Dakota. He appeared in 52 games over the last two seasons, notching 2 goals and 6 assists and a +12 rating while averaging 11:38 of ice time for the Fighting Hawks. Jubenvill skated in 37 out of 38 games as a freshman before being relegated to a part-time role in 15 games in his sophomore campaign. He has three years of NCAA eligibility remaining, thanks to the newly passed 5 year eligibility system.
Prior to making the jump into Division 1 college hockey, Jubenvill was a member of the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL where he skated in 115 regular season and 16 playoff games over two seasons. He potted 16 goals, including 3 scored in the 2024 playoff run, and contributed 32 assists from the Dubuque blue line while leading his team to a deep run in the Clark Cup playoffs, ultimately falling to Fargo in four games.
Jayden was drafted in the second round of the 2022 USHL phase 2 draft and was the 42nd overall pick out of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, where he played one season for the Dauphin Kings right up the road from his hometown of Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. He scored 7 goals and assisted on 30 more in 66 total games between the regular season and playoffs. Prior to his time in juniors, he played his minor hockey with the Parkland Rangers hockey program also in Dauphin.
I reached out to Brad Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald to ask about Jayden, and he was so kind to give me a great scouting report on the new Maverick:
On what to expect from his game: “He’s a rock-solid defender. He’s competitive and tenacious.”
On why his games played and minutes dipped in year two: “He got caught behind a really deep defensive corps at North Dakota, but any time they asked him to step in and do a job, he did it extremely well.”
On his two-way potential: “There’s more offense in his game than you’d expect looking at point totals. He is smart about when he jumps into plays.” (my note: Jubenvill scored the game winner at Baxter Arena to send North Dakota to the Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul and end Omaha’s season in their first-round playoff series in March of 2025.)
On his overall outlook and a new change of scenery: “He’s not going to be an all-NCHC guy, but he’s one of those players who you never worry about, because he always shows up, gets the job done and is reliable. Coaches love reliable defensemen. I suspect he will carve out a regular role on Omaha’s blue line this season”
